First off, if you are with a group that will not allow you to have a pet out... find a different group. Hunters have a bad rep sometimes for causing wipes (and some legitimately do), but did you ever notice they don't tell a lock not to have his pets out? They cause wipes just as often.
It's sometimes difficult to find a group willing to run with you as a hunter, but it's well worth it to wait and find a group that appreciates you and all of your talents. The most important thing to let a group know is "I keep my pet on passive and turn growl off." They are usually worried because sometimes people will come in from battlegrounds w/ pets on agressive and the pet will pull too much aggro.
There's actually a post on this on the bottom of this page or the second page (I forget), but I'd say a SV/MM build would be good for instancing. That way you are less dependant on your pet, and if you ARE forced to run with idiots who don't want you to have it out, you can still do some decent damage. But a hunter without is pet is... well, basically a mage with less pewpew and more armor :p-Zulfrieze (70 troll Hunter, blackrock) SV
